What is an Overpronation?

As weight is being transferred from the heel to the forefoot when walking, the foot naturally rolls inwards resulting in what is referred to as pronation. If the foot rolls too far inwards, overpronation occurs. Ankle Pain

How Are Foot Ulcers Classified?

A foot ulcer is commonly known as “diabetic foot” and as its name suggests, it’s a frequent condition among diabetic patients. It is a wound on the foot that heals slowly and generally forms on the ball of the foot or the bottom of the big toe. Serious conditions can develop from an infected wound that is left untreated, including poor circulation, nerve damage, and in extreme cases risk of limb amputation. Diabetic foot ulcers can be classified into 4 groups. A wound that does not show signs of an infection is called uninfected. When the area around the wound has turned red, is warm to the touch, painful, or slightly swollen, this is known as a mild infection. If the infection involves deeper layers of skin down into the muscle, tendons, bone or joints, then a moderate infection is likely. A high body temperature or fever, accompanied with heavy breathing or a fast heartbeat can cause sepsis making this a severe infection. Wound Care

Diabetics must be wary of all wounds, regardless of depth or size. Diabetes, a chronic disease in which the body cannot properly use glucose the way it normally would, causes various complications that make wounds difficult to heal. Nerve damage or neuropathy will cause diabetics to have trouble feeling the pain of a blister or cut until the condition has significantly worsened or become infected. A diabetic’s weakened immune system can make even the most minor of wounds easily susceptible to infection. Diabetics are also more prone to developing narrow, clogged arteries, and are therefore more likely to develop wounds.

Wounds should be taken care of immediately after discovery, as even the smallest of wounds can become infected if enough bacteria build up within the wound.  To remove dirt, wounds should be first rinsed under running water only. Soap, hydrogen peroxide, or iodine can irritate the injury and should be avoided. To prevent infection, apply antibiotic ointment to the wound and cover it with a bandage. The bandage should be changed daily. The skin around the wound may be cleaned with soap.

To prevent further exacerbation, see a doctor—especially if you have diabetes. Minor skin conditions can become larger problems if not properly inspected. As the wound heals, make sure to avoid applying pressure to the affected area.

If you love high heels, you should be aware that wearing them regularly can take a toll on your feet and may lead to conditions like hammertoes, corns, bunions, Morton’s neuroma, plantar fasciitis, Haglund's deformity (pump bump), and more. While it may be difficult to completely kick the high heel habit, you can lessen their impact and help protect your feet. Take the heels off whenever you can throughout the day and stretch your feet. Alternate heels with flats every other day. Choose shoes that are well made and comfortable with a padded sole. Instead of slip-on, or open back high heels, wear shoes that cover more of your foot and cradle them more securely. Make sure they fit properly both in length and width. Heels that are lower are better, as are wider heels which help distribute weight more evenly. Additionally, a podiatrist may provide custom orthotics to help alleviate pressure points and provide cushion and support where it is needed. A podiatrist may also help you prevent a developing foot condition from worsening, or treat one that has already occurred.

Effect of High Heels on the Feet

For hundreds of years, women have been wearing various kinds of high heels for aesthetic reasons. Women who wear high heels appear to be taller and have longer and thinner legs, and the wearer’s gait and posture changes. Though high heels have had an association with femininity and have kept them popular over the years, there are definite health problems caused by wearing them too frequently.

The motion of the ankle joints is limited when heels are worn. The ankle joint is very important to the body when it comes to walking. Because of their location, these joints have a great deal of weight put on them. Thus, it is very important to keep them as healthy as possible. The Achilles tendon is the main tendon in the ankle. Wearing high heels too often, studies have shown, can cause the calf muscle and Achilles tendon to shorten and stiffen. This can cause problems when shoes without heels are worn.

By putting a great deal of pressure on the ball of the foot and by forcing the toes into a small toe box, high heels can cause or may worsen many foot problems. These include corns, hammertoe, bunions, Morton’s neuroma and plantar fasciitis.

Not only does wearing high heels regularly have negative effects on the feet, the rest of the body can suffer as well. The knees, one of the most important joints in the entire body, can be affected by wearing high heels.  High heels can cause the knees to stay bent all the time. Also, it can cause them to bend slightly inward as well. Doctors believe that women can suffer from osteoarthritis later in life because of constantly walking like in high heels. By limiting the natural motion of the foot during walking, high heels also cause an increased in stress on the knees.

Similarly, high heels can cause the back to go out of alignment. If high heels are worn constantly, the spine’s ability to absorb shock can cause continued back pain. They can compress the vertebrae of the lower back, and can overuse the back muscles.

However, this is not to say that high heels can never be worn. If worn occasionally and not often, they will not cause serious problems. They should not be worn every day. It’s important to wear them modestly to avoid the long-term physical health problems of the feet, knees, ankles, and back mentioned above.

Ankylosing Spondylitis and Heel Pain

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of inflammatory arthritis that affects the spine, but did you know that it can also affect the heels? AS can cause inflammation in not only joints, but also in entheses - points where ligaments and tendons attach to bones. Inflamed entheses result in enthesitis, and a common location for this problem in people with AS is the heel. The Achilles tendon at the back of the heel and the plantar fascia ligament along the bottom of the foot can both become inflamed, causing sharp pain and difficulty walking. Causes of Heel Pain
